How to motivate yourself to exercise during pregnancy

A new survey has revealed that over a third of mums and mums-to-be didn’t exercise at all during pregnancy, with only one in five saying they worked out regularly.

The survey, compiled by The Baby Show (21st to 23rd October) with MadeForMums, showed common reasons for avoiding exercise were; they didn’t normally exercise anyway (49%), being too tired (41%), and finding it too uncomfortable (35%).

Upsettingly, of those surveyed who have already had their babies, more than half said they weren’t happy with their post-baby body.

Here Professor Greg Whyte OBE offers his top tips on how pregnant women can easily exercise and what they can do to ensure a healthy bump:

Don’t go it alone

Find an exercise buddy to go jogging with or an ante-natal yoga class to join. Sharing your exercise makes it easier and more fun.

Every little helps, so don’t lose heart

Adding small amounts of activity in your everyday life can have a huge impact on your overall activity level, for example, get off the bus a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way to work; take the stairs instead of the lift; or walk to the shops rather than drive.

Exercise in small bursts

You don’t have to do all your exercise in one go. Spread your activity across the day into small snippets of 5 to 10 minutes.

Splurge on some fitness tech

Wearable tech to monitor your activity i.e. FitBit, is now a fashion statement. In addition to looking great, wearable tech can help monitor and motivate your activity.

Don’t underestimate invisible exercise

Even when you are standing in the queue at the check-out or waiting for the bus you can exercise. If you do nothing else, keep working your pelvic floor, no-one will know!

Variety is key

To optimise your fitness you need to work your aerobic system, your strength, your core, and your pelvic floor. All this variety means you don’t need to keep doing the same exercise; mix it up and maximise your motivation.
