Book review: 10 Minute Suppers for Children

Mother of four Poppy Fraser is a master of the 10 minute supper.

We heard about 10 Minute Suppers for Children by Poppy Fraser via an acquaintance’s feed on Instagram and immediately asked for a review copy, for what could be more tempting to a time-pressed mother than a kiddie tea that only take 10 minutes to make?

As a mother of four children, two of them – gasp – Irish twins, Dorset-based UnknownPoppy Fraser knows a thing or two about creating lightening quick recipes to feed a hungry brood, and her book is a real delight.

Very small, hard-backed and printed on quality matt paper in a traditional font reminiscent of a Beatrix Potter book, 10 Minute Suppers has an old-fashioned feel to it and, while the lack of glossy pictures might frustrate some, for us, the hand-drawn illustrations that take their place, simply add to its charm. In fact, this book would make a great stocking filler.

But what about the recipes? We’re not sure about you but, for us, a 10 minute supper means Bird’s Eye fish fingers or scrambled eggs. Fortunately, Poppy is far more inventive and while some of the recipes are undoubtedly quite ambitious – there’s not a chance our lot would tolerate a tuna, butterbean and samphire salad – there are plenty of ideas for less adventurous eaters and FullSizeRender16younger palates too.

Green Pancakes, for example (an excellent way to crow-bar some spinach into a veggie-hating toddler), or Chicken and Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta, Carrot Hummus; or, for a special treat, Chocolate and Banana Toasties (sure to be a hit).

Overall, there is a good mixture of simple and more challenging tastes and textures for youngsters to try and we do feel inspired after reading this to test our own little ones’ palates a bit more sometimes; encourage a wider, healthier and more exciting variety of dishes – all in under 10 minutes, of course.

Poppy Fraser is a mother of four based in Dorset. Her first book, Fantastic Recipes from my Favourite People, was published in 2006. 10 Minute Suppers for Children (£12.99) is published by Fraser Publishing and is available to buy via Amazon
